What to do if you want to merge two LinkedIn accounts

I received an email recently requesting details on how to merge two LinkedIn accounts as the person in question had managed to set up two over time, and it reminded me that I needed to write an up to date blog on how to do this – so here it is!

If you can log into both accounts with your name on it, and you have more than zero but less than 30 thousand connections, it’s a simple process to merge the two (but you will need to cancel your Premium subscription first, cancel any outstanding job postings or listings and cancel all Advertising Campaigns on the account you close).

If you have forgotten the password for the account you want to close but remember the email address associated with that account you will need to request a new one from LinkedIn by going to the sign in page and clicking “Forgot Password?” link. Once you have regained access to the account you can follow the steps listed above.

But, if you can’t remember the email address associated with the duplicate account you will need to follow LinkedIn’s identity verification process– see our blog here.

If one of the profiles doesn’t have any connections I would suggest you simply close this account rather than merge it – see how to close an account on an old blog here.

There are however a couple of things you should be aware of before merging two accounts.  You will only be able to transfer the connections and email address of the account you want to close, you won’t be able to merge profile content, edits, endorsements, recommendations or saved articles, and any InMail credits you have will be lost.

Once you have done this, just follow these steps:

Step 1 – Search for yourself on LinkedIn and identify the profile you want to keep. From this account click on Me under your photo on the top right-hand side

Step 2 – On the drop-down menu select Settings and Privacy

Step 3 – Select account, then account management

Step 4 – Click on Change on the Merging LinkedIn Accounts option

Step 5 – Insert the email address and password for the account you want to close and then click Submit.

Step 6 – You will then be asked to confirm that you are closing the right account and will need to click Continue.

Step 7 – Next you need to enter the password of the account you want to keep confirming that you want to merge the accounts and then click Submit.

Once you have completed these steps you will receive a confirmation notification email from LinkedIn to the email address on your primary account.
