Share an update with LinkedIn©
Wouldn’t it be great if there was a simple, quick way to share a message with your entire network? Something for them to choose to read, nothing pushy, nothing that would be emailed to them or bug them? Well you can – it’s called a status update.
On your LinkedIn home page you can find the “share an update” at the top of your home page when you log in. If you have a photograph on your profile (and you really should!) it will be the large white oblong box next to it, if you don’t have aphotograph then it is the large white oblong box next to the small white box with a grey outline in it where your photograph should be!
Anything you type into this box will appear on all of the people you are connected with at level one, i.e the people you have invited to connect or vice versa for them to choose to read.
It is worth bearing in mind it automatically starts with your name so in my case “James Potter ” so remember to start with “is” or something similar or it will look odd. The good news is also if someone comments or “likes” your status update it gets shown to all their connections too! And all your connections can also see their comments. If you’re connected to 500 people and you did it every working day for a month, you will have impressed your value and your message 10,000 times or more.
To make it an even richer source of insight about you and what you’re up to you can also attach a URL / web link, a blog post or an interesting website then hit attach. See below
You can then click edit and amend all of the text in the name and body. See below
So now you have a bespoke personalised message, just like the one below to share with everyone you are directly connected with (at level one) on your LinkedIn network. Just like the final example below
So if you want to share with your network the value and range of products, services and expertise you offer start sharing the news.

Great article, simple things like this make a massive difference. Thanks for sharing the article.
My only issue is that at the moment Linkedin is picking up a graphic from my old website! Never mind, will get some status updates on nonetheless.
Thanks James,
Dave

It normally picks the first graphic from the page and if a multiple choice it will give you a left and right arrow selection under the image.
Hope that helps but websites aren’t my “thing” LinkedIn is 🙂
Best wishes,

Hi James,
Great article. I have a question – when posting an update, is there a way you can send this to a particular contact group you have personally defined? Or, similarly is there a way that you can not have certain contacts receive any of your updates? Some of the updates I do will have no relevance at all to some contacts and it would be great not to spam them.
Many thanks!
John
Hi, this doesn’t seem to work anymore…there is no place to attach a url, only a document…am I doing something wrong?
Hi linkedinman,
Do you know how to share an update with a picture or a youtube link in it and have that picture the full width and not just as a thumbnail? Mine always gets down to a thumbnail, but I see others post with full width.
Many thanks,
Irene
Hi Irene,
It will come up full width if you post from within LinkedIn using a sharing link or picture (assuming its not a tiny one!), the thumbnails often come up if you use a 3rd party tool such as a Hootsuite or Tweetdeck type platform. You will also be showna thumbnail when you put teh update out but if you then look at your updates (under profile) you will see its full size. You will also find some of the ad formats use thumbnails as opposed to full width. I posted one today so you can see what it looks like on my profile activity. Best wishes, James – The Linked In Man
