“I’d like to add you to my professional network” is dead

Picking up on our previous blog where LinkedIn killed off three features (carousels, profile cover video and in-image labels) they have also killed off that staple message of LinkedIn “I’d like to add you to my professional network”!

How many times have you seen that email message come in and your heart sinks or flutters? LinkedIn realised it had issues around the phrase a couple of years ago when it simply stopped showing you that message within LinkedIn but retained it on the email notification, but now that too has gone the way of the dinosaur.

Now it is “I just requested to connect” and that’s it!

We’re massive fans of comparing LinkedIn with real life, if you treat them both the same it will work really well for you. Now imagine in real life someone coming up to you at an event and saying “I just requested to connect” and walked off – weird huh?

So don’t forget when you are sending an invite to connect to take a few moments to personalise the message (from the desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile – you can do it on them all), as it will make you look as professional (and human!) as you are, and make it much more likely to be accepted too.
